Sega Rage Guy #3

Another "no news" day, another Sega Rage Guy! I decided to theme this one on the announcement of Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, and the general reaction of the internet.

Most people were horrified at the prospect of a "Sega Kart" game, but thrown in Richard Jacques, Sumo Digital and forklifts and you've got a Day One purchase!

I'm pretty sure Ulala in the bottom-left picture reads my blog. Anyway, I'm genuinely excited about this game, and I hope it turns out to be excellent. Perhaps everything will go better than expected!

Vintage Collection dates released

Yesterday Sega revealed the release dates for the games part of Vintage Collection 2. The games will be available to download on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.

Some of the titles have added online functionality, such as the ability to play Sonic 3's Competition Mode over the internet.

A price for the individual downloads has not been released yet, and neither has confirmation of whether some of the games will remain XBLA exclusive.

Here are the release dates:
  • Gunstar Heroes - June 10th (XBLA), June 11th (PSN), Online
  • Altered Beast - June 10th (XBLA), Online
  • Shinobi (Arcade Version) - June 10th (XBLA), No online
  • Comix Zone - June 10th (XBLA), No online
  • Phantasy Star II - June 10th (XBLA), No online
  • Sonic 3 - June 10th (XBLA), Online
  • Sonic and Knuckles - Late Summer 2009 (XBLA), Online
Hopefully more of the games will become available on the PSN, especially Sonic and Knuckles with its Lock-On technology that was (deliberately?) left out of Mega Drive Ultimate Collection. In fact, the best option is probably just to buy the compilation disc - most of the games in Vintage Collection 2 are available on it.

Sega News Summary: 29/05/09

Unfortunately, my internet connection has been terrible today so I have not been able to access the blog until now. I will therefore summarise today's news, and hopefully everything will be back to normal soon.
I cannot guarantee there will be any posts in the next few days, so check the other blogs for now! I just hope my internet connection will work again tomorrow.

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing announced

Sega have just announced their latest game, which will be entitled Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. It has a release date of early 2010, and will be available on the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS.

The game will be the latest installment of the Stars series, which includes Sega Superstars and Sega Superstars Tennis. It seems the series has been renamed to include Sonic in the title, perhaps to make it more clear that everyone's favourite hedgehog is present.

Expect loops and corkscrews aplenty!

The title explains the basic premise of the game - cartoon racing with Sega's most well-known characters. Here is the official press release:

"SEGA Europe Ltd. and SEGA America, Inc., today announced Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, a fast and furious battle to the finish line in this supercharged racer. Developed for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system, PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system, the home video game system, Wii and the Nintendo DS system, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing will speed into stores in early 2010.

In a frantic battle to the chequered flag, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing sees Sonic and friends speed around tracks set in mediaeval castle ramparts, lush rainforests and bustling cities, all taken from the visually rich and varied universes of Sonic and SEGA. Fan favourites such as Dr. Eggman, Tails, AiAi, Amigo and many more will join Sonic in their custom built vehicles, revving their engines and jostl
ing to stay ahead of the pack. Each character will race around the track in cars, planes, motorbikes, and in AiAi's case - a banana mobile! Secret short cuts, swift handling and avoiding strategically placed obstacles are certainly the best way to get to the top of the podium.

"Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is no ordinary racing game. Its hu
ge variety of characters and vehicles, plus the ability to play both online and off set it apart from other games of this type" commented Gary Knight European Marketing Director, SEGA Europe Ltd. "The team have pushed the boundaries on what you would normally expect and created a different and unique party racing title whereby you really can't take anything for granted!"

And winning is only part of the fun in Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing! Each character has a specific All Star move such as Super Sonic, Banana Blitz and Tails Tornado, allowing a quick way for competitors to get back into the race! Power ups and weapons can also be collected around the tracks and used agai
nst the opposition to ensure they don't become a threat to that number one position... Players can battle it out in single or multiplayer mode, allowing up to four friends to race in frantic split-screen action, or up to eight players to compete online in the ultimate racing showdown."
A new Sega game was expected to be announced tomorrow, but it has instead been brought forward one day. The title was said to be no "huge surprise", but I certainly couldn't have predicted this. I am actually glad - I've always wanted another Sonic racer!

Sega say there will be no new announcements at E3 next week, so this is the only surprise we'll get for the time being. Anyway, you can see the trailer for All-Stars Racing here:

Tiny Sega arcade cabinets on display in Japan

Is that Alien in the background?

Back in February, miniature versions of Sega's Super-Scaler games were announced with an expected release this Spring. Now, they are on display at the Shizuoka Hobby Show in Japan.

This is the first time the "secret" After Burner model has been seen. The original advertisement for the models had this particular cabinet blanked out.

Just four inches tall, the entire line-up consists of Out Run, Hang-On, Space Harrier, Thunder Blade and After Burner.

Also available from an entirely different manufacturer is a tiny Zaxxon cabinet, which forms a set with Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede, Phoenix and Defender.

UK Charts: Week Ending 23/05/09

Another week, another predictable UK chart! Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games has again fallen just out of the Top 10, dropping four places to #11. Football Manager 2009 has dropped one place to #23.

Mega Drive Ultimate Collection has fallen as well, dropping five places from #24 to #29. Sonic Unleashed has had the biggest drop of any Sega game this week, falling sixteen places to #31.

It's not all bad news for Sega games, however - Sega Superstars Tennis has entered the chart once again at #34. We last saw it in the week ending 13th December, 2008!

More charts next week. See last week's here.

Get SNASM2 on your Saturn too!

Why, it's even taller than a Mega Drive/Mega CD/32X tower!

Yesterday I mentioned the SNASM2 development kit for the 32X, which I read about on ASSEMbler Games. After further research I found there was a whole range of SNASM kits for many different consoles!

You can get the original SNASM kit for the SNES and Mega Drive, and the SNASM2 for the Jaguar, 32X and Saturn. The Saturn version was advertised for $3,000 (£1,885), but you can pick one up here for just $399 (£250)!

Here is a news report about the SNASM2 from September 1995, with lots of words I don't understand:

"Integrated with Mirage is a new version of the Sega Saturn debugger software called SNASM2.1 - also supplied by Cross Products. SNASM2.1 is the latest version of Cross Products' real-time PC-based debugger.

New features include comprehensive search facilities in source, memory, and disassembly windows; symbol completion; support for GNU C++ qualified function names; a SNASM2-to-GNU COFF converter; and a standalone COFF loader utility. Working with Mirage, SNASM2.1 lets programmers debug code on the PC while code is being tested on a production Sega Saturn with real-time CD emulation. The full development environment, including the Mirage CD-ROM Emulator, the CartDev interface, SNASM2.1 software, a PC SCSI card and modified production Sega Saturn, is available now for under $8,000."

The producer of the SNASM2, Cross Products, was based in Leeds. It was then bought out by Sega in August 1994, and then sold to Imagination Technologies in September 2001.

Unfortunately I've never had any success programming on old systems. I did manage to program a Matrix computer simulator for the ZX Spectrum in BASIC, however. It had random letters and everything!

Make 32X games for just £3,000!

In a thread over on Assembler Games about 32X development, someone has uncovered an old advert offering a 32X development kit for just £3,000!

The advert comes from Issue 17 of Edge, released in February 1995. The product is entitled "SNASM2", and is "the world's most exciting development tool for the Sega 32X". Here is a shortened list of the "benefits" of the SNASM2:
  • Hundreds already in use by developers worldwide
  • RAPID PORTING of existing code and code samples
  • Comes complete with GNU C for the SH2
  • Includes the highly-regarded SNASM2 debugger
  • Uses enhanced production Genesis & 32X
  • Uses Non-Maskable Interrupts (NMI) to all 3 processors
  • Simulated boot
  • More than a programming tool, not just an EPROM Emulator
  • High-speed SCSI-2 interface
  • Advanced design incorporating dual port RAM and NMI
  • Supplied with 32Mbit (4MB) of RAM
If you understood all of that then you should hand over your £3,000 straight away! That's about $4,770 to all you Americans, using today's monetary values. A cheaper option would be to buy the "CartDev" 32X kit for just £75 from Andy's Arcade.

Delicious.

I would buy one just so I could say the name - "SNASM2". Or to all you Americans - "S-N-A-S-M-2".

Check out dis '90s attitude!

Famitsu releases new Yakuza 3 t-shirts

A Tango'd Toshihiro Nagoshi models the new t-shirt.

Famitsu have released a new t-shirt design based on Yakuza 3 as part of their "Game T-Shirt Project". The t-shirt, available in two colours, joins three other Yakuza designs as well as some 428 designs.

Entitled "Kamuro City" (the setting of the game), the design features a montage of buildings all balanced on Kiryu's head. The back features some Engrish, which is surely worth the ¥4,500 (£30) asking price alone:
"DEADLEY KAMURO CITY IS BURNING BUT DREAMING"
The t-shirt is available in white with black detail, or black with multi-coloured detail. Only medium and large sizes are available.

This nice/scary man wants you to buy his stuff. Please do so.

You can see the rest of the Yakuza 3 and 428 designs here. I am sure more Sega games will be featured on Famitsu's t-shirts in the future.

Weekly Famitsu: Volume 1068 (05/06/09)

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen stars as Phoenix Wright.

Unfortunately, there isn't much Sega-based news in this week's Famitsu. There is a lovely Phoenix Wright cover, however.

A new blog for the gassy RPG End of Eternity, known as Resonance of Fate in the West, has just been launched. The official blog, written by members of tri-Ace, is set to feature new details on the game, as well as screenshots and trailers. The game is due for release in Winter 2009/Spring 2010.

There is news on Sega's upcoming puzzler Puyo Puyo 7, including character information for apple girl Ringo Ando. New screenshots have been released, and there are some free downloadable wallpapers of random actress Erika Toda, who is endorsing the game.

Platinum Games' upcoming sci-fi RPG Infinite Space will be playable at the Akihabara Sofmap on May 30th, from 12:00pm-5:00pm. That is if you trust the translation, however. The game's website has also been updated with new details, including a release date of June 11th.

In Famitsu's "Press Start - Symphony of Games" concert this year, to be held on August 2nd in the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space, numbers from Fantasy Zone will be performed. Two medleys are planned, the first containing music from Rounds 1-3, a boss and Game Over; the second containing music from Round 5, the shop, another boss, and the ending.

That concludes this week's Famitsu news. Unfortunately the website where I get Famitsu's latest scores doesn't work, so I can't see how their latest games have been received. Oh well.

See Volume 1065 here.

Dux released on Dreamcast

The latest Dreamcast game to be released is the h-scroller Dux. It was originally slated for release in November 2008, but it was actually completed yesterday and is now available for pre-order.

Initially, two versions were available for pre-order - a Limited Edition and a Regular Edition. The former has now sold out, leaving just the Regular Edition, which is available for $27.90 (£18).

Every pre-order comes with a sticker, poster and a soundtrack. The pre-orders are set to be dispatched in two weeks.

Here is a list of the final game's features:
  • 6 stages filled with space alien scum and threats
  • 3 upgradeable weapon types
  • Upgradeable force device
  • Multiple checkpoints within each stage
  • Super smooth high-resolution CGI visuals
  • Up to 3 loops with different difficulties
  • Risk & Reward scoring system
  • VGA support
  • Region Free
Another new Dreamcast game is available too, called Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles. The puzzle game, released last year, can be bought here.

Despite the Dreamcast being dropped in the West in 2002, there has still been continuous development for the console. There hasn't been a year since its launch where no new games have been released, meaning there's still life in it yet!

Were ThinkGeek's new Dreamcasts, well, old?

Nice Transformers covers!

Last month, ThinkGeek were selling a batch of new Dreamcasts for $100, all of which promptly sold out. Branded as "new in box", one buyer has stated that his was far from it.

Costing around $200 including postage, the anonymous buyer has said:
"While the extra controller was new, the console was far from it. The console itself is roughed up - the barcode has been scratched, the console's plastic has gunk on it."
He mentions there was further damage, things that time alone could not have caused. He has requested a refund from ThinkGeek, who, after two weeks, have not yet responded.

Could this mean all the consoles were used? Perhaps old systems were put in new boxes, or only some parts of the package were entirely new. So far this has been the only complaint to surface, so this may have been the only "old" console.

To sum it up, the buyer says:
"I could have easily bought a used Dreamcast locally for $25."
He could have indeed.

UK Charts: Week Ending 16/05/09

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, which made its way back into the Top 10 last week, is continuing its ascent. It is now at #7, two places up from last week. Sonic Unleashed has dropped one place to #15.

Football Manager 2009 has risen one place to #22, as has Mega Drive Ultimate Collection at #24.

That's it for another boring week in the charts. Will we ever see any more interesting games? If they all do as well as Mario and Sonic, then probably not.

More charts next week. See last week's here.

E3 2009 floor plans released

The floor plans for this year's E3 Expo have just been released. The event is running from June 2-4 at the LA Convention Centre, and is expected to be a return to the larger shows of the 1990s.

South Hall

The "big three" companies have been separated this year, with Sony and Nintendo taking up most of the West Hall and Microsoft having a mid-sized stand in the South Hall. The latter is where Sega's stand will be, next to EA, Konami and MTV.

Second Level

There are stands on the second level of the building, with Sega being next to Square Enix and opposite LucasArts.

Here are Sega's confirmed games so far:
  • Alpha Protocol
  • Bayonetta
  • Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
  • Planet 51
  • The Conduit
  • Vancouver 2010
This year looks set to be one of the biggest and best E3 expos ever, similar to how it was before the 2007 restructure. I can't wait to find out what the big announcements will be, but I'll just have to wait until June!

Foxyshot turns out to be an old mobile phone game

The recent trademark for the name "Foxyshot" has been found to be for a mobile phone game released in 2005. It was available for download via Sega's "Sonic Café" service.

Here is a translation of the plot:
"A terrorist group hijacked the city! Calamity Jane must wipe them out in a magnificent gun fight and save the hostages!"
The gameplay is quite simple. A terrorist appears in one of nine squares - to shoot them you must press the corresponding number on your keypad. You can hide behind a wall Time Crisis-style, and must reload when you have run out of ammo.

Hostages sometimes appear in the windows, so try not to shoot them! At the end of a level there is a boss - defeat him to proceed. There are three levels in total, each in a themed area: a plant, a nightclub and a movie theatre.

"Future Police Patochaser" still appears to be an upcoming game, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Master System port of R-Type coming to Virtual Console

The Master System port of Irem's R-Type is coming to the Virtual Console, priced at 500 Wii Points. It is scheduled for a Japanese release on May 19th, with no dates set for a worldwide release.

The TurboGrafx-16 version is currently available on the North American and European stores, the Master System version being the second port of the game available.

Considered a shooting game classic, the Master System port is generally considered one of the best. Back in 1989, C+VG gave the game 87%:
R-Type is by far the best blast available on the Sega, so it goes without saying that no shoot-'em-up fan should be without it.
Although no dates have been given for a European and North American release, I would expect it to appear this summer.

Yet more Zach Morris rumours surface

Just as a disclaimer, I do not believe what Zach Morris is saying, and I am reporting on these "rumours" to show to others that they are not true.

On FGNOnline there have been yet more false rumours surrounding a possible Sega console, as well as apparent details on the next Yakuza game.

The follow-up to the original "new console" article, which was supposed to give details on a handheld based on RingWide technology, has been "cancelled". According to Zach Morris, Sega-Sammy themselves have requested that he does not publish the article. How very convenient.

A new rumour has surfaced from the same site, outlining concepts for the next Yakuza game. It will apparently be more Grand Theft Auto-based, to avoid a possible GTA: Tokyo taking away Yakuza sales. I suspect this article was posted to draw attention away from the consoles and make the website more credible.

I have personally been sent "tips" about FGNOnline from the Zach Morris hoaxer himself. Both Zach Morris and the sender of the tips have an email address ending "@email2me.net", which seems rather uncommon. This proves further that all the rumours are false.

Pitfall released on European Virtual Console

The Mega Drive version of Activision classic Pitfall has just been released on the European Virtual Console. The game was released last month on the North American store.

Mayan Adventure, the fourth game in series, was first released back in 1994 on almost every major platform at the time. I personally have the PC and Mega Drive versions, with ports on the SNES, Mega CD, 32X, Jaguar and Game Boy Advance also available.

I really like this game - the humorous animations make it even better. For example, when you land in some quicksand, Harry Jr. waves goodbye as he sinks to his imminent demise. Nintendo Life like the game as well, giving it 8/10.

One of the best parts of the game is the ability to play the original Atari 2600 version. Just enter a secret code on the title screen and get ready to see all the pixelly goodness!

Overall, this is a recommended download. It is available now and costs 800 Wii Points.

Sega's latest trademarks

Sega's next hit game?

Sega have recently trademarked some names, both of which are for use with videogames. They will most likely be for new software.

The first trademarked name is "Foxyshot", which sounds utterly amazing. Siliconera are wondering whether it will be a new lightgun game, with others thinking it could be a Tails spin-off or even the name for Sega's hoax console!

The next name has been translated as "Future Police Patochaser". It is unknown what a "Patochaser" is, but searching for "pato" in Japanese Google Images comes up with tiny patrol cars, flashing lights included. "Pato" must therefore be a gairaigo word for "patrol".

It probably won't be long until we find out what these names will be used for. Hopefully something to do with foxes and police.

More speculation about Sega's 2010 consoles

Throughout the Sega community it is now the general consensus that Sega's 2010 consoles are fake. First posted on an unknown news blog, the stories detailing new Sega consoles based on their new arcade hardware have been almost entirely rubbished.

There are some reasons why the stories are believable - the blog has posted previous news about Sega-Sammy prior to this, many of the hardware facts are true and the idea of producing two consoles based on new arcade hardware is plausible.

But there are other reasons that show the stories are almost certainly fake. The first is the name of the reporter - "Zach Morris". This was a well-known character in the sitcom Saved By The Bell, and was the same name used in various Sega hoaxes in 2004. It is unlikely that the names are just a coincidence.

Another point is the blog itself - it takes the name of a previous blog, FGNOnline, which shut down in the early 2000s. The layout is dated and cheap, and the previous news about Sega-Sammy is probably there to make the "exclusive" news look legitimate.

One other extremely suspect point about the website is the forum. The administrator refers to "Mr. Morris" in the third person, when it is extremely likely that they are same. Some of the members, namely "Digi", "Crackdude", "Omega" and "Realgamer" all seem to be the same person as well, agreeing with each other in quick succession and rubbishing other speculative members' posts (including a member from Sega Nerds). The last name, "Realgamer", is the most suspicious - the previous "Zach Morris" Sega hoax was posted on a website entitled "Real Games Players". It is therefore extremely likely that Zach Morris, the administrator, all the aforementioned posters and "BIGGER" on the SoA Boards are indeed the same person.

One theory as to all of this could be that someone has actually discovered all of this information. The whole thing could be true, designed to look fake by using past hoaxes as inspiration. Then when the real thing was announced, there would an "I told you so" from FGNOnline. I severely doubt this, however.

Aside from this, people have been wondering why Sega would even enter the hardware market at this stage - 2010 is far too early to produce a "next-gen" console, when the "current-gen" hasn't even seen its peak. Going directly against Nintendo seems like a ridiculous idea as well; people would be unlikely to switch brands for a new casual console.

There has been a new post on the website regarding the next part of the story:
"Earlier in the week we provided you part 1 of our world exclusive report where we brought to light top secret details of SEGA SAMMY's plans of introducing a next generation HD capable casual console based around the RINGEDGE arcade hardware.

Next week FGNOnline shall present to you part 2 of our world exclusive where we discuss SEGA SAMMY's plans of yet another consumer hardware product this time based around the RINGWIDE arcade hardware.

Stay tuned.

- Zach Morris"
I would say to ignore whatever is said as the entire thing, with the help of the Sega community, has been almost completely rubbished.

Wednesday 13 May 2009

Have Sega got two new consoles in the pipeline?

Sega's new arcade boards, the RingEdge and RingWide.

Yesterday I reported Sega's apparent plans to release a new casual console next year, as announced on an unknown blog. The article outlining Sega's plans was Part 1 of a series, with Part 2 still to follow.

The blog, FGNOnline, also has a forum. The administrator has said today in one of the threads that Part 2 will be up next week with an announcement based on Sega's RingWide arcade architecture.

With a new console announced based on the RingEdge hardware, the next article will announce a new handheld based on the RingWide hardware. This means Sega could be releasing two consoles next year, both around the Holiday Season.

Here is what was said on the forum:
"Part 1 = World exclusive details on a SEGA SAMMY consumer home system based on the RINGEDGE architecture.

Part 2 = World exclusive details on a SEGA SAMMY consumer portable based on the RINGWIDE architecture.

Part 2 should be up sometime next week."
The article outlining Sega's new consoles has been open to much speculation as to its authenticity. Many of the hardware facts are completely true, but it is unknown whether Sega really are going to produce consoles based on their Ring arcade boards.

The article mentioned a "Game Gear 2" was in the works at one point, so this could be a continuation of that project. Nothing has been said about possible features yet, such as a touch-screen. Details are to be expected next week.

The name "Zach Morris" has been tied to a "new Sega console" hoax from 2004, posted on a website called "Real Games Players". This is what was said:
"Hajime Satomi Interested In "home Hardware" (7th June 2004)

Today I have some earth shattering news

A close colleague of RGP who has connection with people within Sega of Japan has informed us that Hajime Satomi the Chairman/CEO of Sega Sammy has "serious" intentions towards the "home console market front".

It has been said that Satomi has some "serious serious plans" for "rapid expansion" into businesses which would lead to an "explosion of income".

Our informant tells us that Satomi is watching the current hardware scene with a "Hawks Eye"

Our colleague continues-

"A major factor in deciding whether to release the soon to be unvieled Naomi 3 arcade board based console would be on what Microsoft and Nintendo are up to"

Apparantly Satomi-san believes their chance will come if Nintendo and Microsoft team up, so that Sega can slip in as the third entrant.

This is all the news which is available at this moment in time.

Stay tuned...

Industry Insider - Insider scoops EIC"

This makes these announcements even more unlikely - Real Games Players had multiple Sega-based hoaxes in 2004:
"New Sega titles revealed! (Exclusive)

Today, we can exclusively reveal to you the games Sega will showcase to the world for the very first time on the 29th.

Here they are!

Shenmue III (XBox)

Panzer Dragoon Saga II (Xbox)

Crazy Taxi 4 (Xbox/PS2/GC)

Super Monkey Ball 3 (Xbox/PS2/GC)

OutRun 2 (Xbox/PS2/PSP)

Virtua Fighter 4 Final Tuned (Xbox/PSP worldwide) - PS2 Japan only

Shinobi 2 (PS2)

Spikeout X-treme (XBox/PS2)

Sega Superstars (PS2/XBox/GC)

Sonic the Hedgehog No Ones (PS2/XBox/PSP/NDS)

Sega Superstars will be a sequel to Fighters Megamix. Outrun 2 will have a total of 12 cars compared to the arcade versions 8 and will support online play. Crazy Taxi 4's launch will coincide with the release of the movie. Sonic No Ones will consist of Sonic1, 2, 3, & Knuckles, CD, Spinball, and the new Advance 3. Both Shenmue III and Panzer Dragoon Saga 2 will be funded and published by MS as 2nd party titles.

Sega's conference will take place on the 29th of April, where all these games will be shown for the very first time.

-- Zach Morris

editor-in-chief"
FGNOnline was quick to deny that this was the same Zach Morris, however:
"We directed this post to the attention of Mr Morris, who stated that he has no knowledge of freewebs.com/realgamesplayer and that particular Zach Morris is not he.

FGNOnline is Mr Morris's very first online portal.

Hopefully that has clarified any misconceptions you may of had."

As I said before, I'll wait for further information about these articles. Are they real, or just an elaborate hoax? I'll be sure to read the second part of the article when it is published next week.

Is Sega planning to release a new console in 2010?

Could all our dreams finally be coming true? Probably not.

A website, entitled "Fast Game News Online", has posted an article apparently revealing Sega's plans for a new console. The blog has posted previous news articles such as Sega-Sammy's corporate restructuring, with the writer, Zach Morris, being "in the industry for over 30 years" and "a business associate of industry legends such as Hayao Nakayama, Isao Okawa, [and] Hajime Satomi".

Sega has recently dispelled rumours of a possible Dreamcast 2 announcement at this year's E3.

The post, with the title "Sega-Sammy Consumer Hardware Roadmap", outlines Sega's console plans made since the Dreamcast, including a "new Game Gear" and an upcoming casual gaming console based on the RingEdge arcade board.

Here is the article in full, interesting points in bold:

"Today we would like to present to you part 1 of our world exclusive report in which we shed light on SEGA SAMMY's plan for a HD casual system in development since 2007 and scheduled for worldwide release for the holiday season of 2010.

History

At the end of 1999 SEGA held a press conference where they laid out their hardware ambitions and talked extensively about broadband and a whole host of future technologies. Shoichiro Irimajiri was stated here as saying that SEGA would strike back with a vengeance in the next millenium. By Spring 2000 Irimajiri-san was already tasked with heading the development of SEGA's next console, Irimajiri was stated as saying that it would be a joint venture with numerous companies because the future box would do more than just play videogames thus they had to partner with cable companies, telecommuncation companies and Hollywood conglomerates. The aim for the design was a single chip solution measuring in at 250 million transistors ready for a Q4 2004 worldwide release. What is not known by the mainstream is that SEGA at this time was also in early stages of development for a 3D handheld which was to be based on the chip that went on to be known as the MBX developed by Imagination Technologies PowerVR division. The PowerVR MBX hit silicon in 2002 about the time SEGA had initially planned on launching a new Game Gear. This device would have beaten the PSP to market by 2 years. All of these plans where scrapped however by Isao Okawa who foresaw a software future for the company, the rest of the company however where vehemently against the idea of software only.

Fast forward a few years to early 2003 when Hideki Sato and the rest of SEGA's high level executives were desperately in search for either a merger or even a sale of the company. The discussions where being held with Sammy, Namco, EA and Microsoft. Again what is not known to the general public is that the reason for SEGA's desperation was that at this very moment SEGA had yet another system in development which had a worldwide target ship date of Q4 2005. This system would have competed against what went on to be known as the XBOX360 and Sony's PS3. The system was designed around a PowerVR Series 5 GPU and an unknown CPU, using standard DVD it was to be a cost/performance solution targeting a $300 launch price tag whilst simultaneously incorporating equal 3D throughput as the higher priced offerings by the competition. SEGA and Imagination Technologies on the 18th of March 2004 released a press release regarding the development of the chip for arcade use. Come Jamma 2005 when the world was expecting SEGA to unveil it's PowerVR based arcade board everyone was shocked to learn of the LINDBERGH which was basically a PC tower with an nVidia 6800GT and a Intel Pentium 4 3GHz Prescott. Whatever happened to the PowerVR based integrated silicon arcade board? Simple, the console that was to be based on the arcade board was scrapped by the newly formed SEGA SAMMY. With no console counterpart for the arcade board it wasn't financially feasible to spend tens and indeed hundreds of millions of dollars on integrated silicon thus SEGA quietly without telling anyone just took a mother board and slotted in components from a mid range PC from 2004 and called it "LINDBERGH". The PowerVR Series 5 whose development SEGA funded lived on however as the PowerVR SGX series of mobile GPU's. The Series 5 architecture was designed to be highly scaleable, low end parts for mobile phones and high end parts for arcade boards and consoles, unfortunately the world never got to see the performance of the higher end variants.

So to recap -

There was a next gen system in development in 2000 which was scrapped by owner Isao Okawa and there was a next gen system in development in 2003/2004 which was scrapped by Isao Okawa's friend and new owner Hajime Satomi.

Present and Future

With the Nintendo Wii hitting retail and gaining worldwide superstardom of the likes never witnessed SEGA SAMMY once again immediately got to work on another system with orders from the boss himself Satomi-san. This system shall be a HD casual console and is designed to compete with the successor to the Wii. The design of the system FGN can officially confirm was finalised in late 2008, it's arcade variant goes by the name "RINGEDGE" the specifications of the system are as follows.

The chosen CPU is the Intel Pentium E2160 Allendale 1.8GHz Dual-Core Processor, the GPU of choice is the Shader Model 4.0 compliant 9600GSO with 384 MB GDDR3 RAM, System memory measuring 1GB DDR2-800. Other features include an onboard HD audio DSP, 32GB SSD, standard DVD, and WiFi connectivity. SEGA SAMMY plans on shipping the system with two controllers, a motion sensing remote and one which looks similar to the Saturn 3D controller. One for casual gaming the other for non-casual. To top this off SEGA SAMMY shall be using a stripped down version of Microsoft's Windows Embedded Standard 2009 for ease of development. This particular version differs from the standard version where only the DirectX functionality is included, the standard edition costs $90 per shipping device. As SEGA SAMMY's version doesn't include the non gaming features SEGA SAMMY has managed to get a hold of the OS for less than half of that cost.

SEGA SAMMY plans on launching the system in time for the holiday season of 2010 for no less than $200 and no more than $250. The company doesn't plan on publically acknowledging the project this year, thus an official announcement won't take place until 1H 2010.

Stay tuned for part 2 of our world exclusive where we shed light on SEGA SAMMY's consumer plans for the "RINGWIDE" ."

People in the games community are suspicious about the article, especially when someone called "BIGGER" posted the link on the Sega of America forum as their first post, then promptly disappeared.

It should be noted that "Zach/Zack Morris" is a character on many sitcoms, including Saved By The Bell; and that "FGNOnline" is the name of a previous games website, shut down in 2001.

Here is the rundown of this alleged upcoming console:

  • Based on Sega's RingEdge arcade board
  • Aims to compete with the Wii's successor
  • HD Graphics
  • Comes with two controllers: One motion-sensing for casual games and the other, based on the Saturn's 3D controller, for "hardcore" games
  • First announcement expected early 2010
  • Release date Holiday Season 2010
  • Price range $200-$250
What has also been pointed out by members of the community is that a wireless, motion-sensing 3D-esque controller has recently been trademarked by Sega. Could this be the "hardcore" controller mentioned in the article?

I suspect this is completely fake, but even if it was true I would be severely disappointed. Another casual games console is not what we need, and is certainly not what most long-term Sega fans would want.

I'll wait for further news on this - probably confirming that it is indeed a hoax.

UK Charts: Week Ending 09/05/09

Well, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games wasn't away for long. It has made its way back into the Top 10, climbing up three places to #9. Sonic Unleashed has had a massive resurgence in sales, probably due to cut prices. It is now at #14, being at #21 last week and #40 the week before!

Football Manager 2009 is climbing up the charts as well, gaining three places to finish at #23. Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is not far behind, falling two places to #25.

Speaking of Mega Drive Ultimate Collection, you'll have another chance to re-buy old Sega titles from previous compilations on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network soon. Yay!

More charts next week. See last week's here.

Sega Europe's retro bargains

Martin the Fat Ninja of the Sega Europe blog has posted his latest haul of retro Sega goodness. He seems to have a lot more luck at car boot sales than I do!

His first find was a Sega "Lock-On" laser tag game, bought for just £2 boxed. I had one of these, though not Sega-branded, unfortunately.

The best find was this box full of Mega Drive games, 58 to be exact. Scarily, it looks almost exactly like my Mega Drive collection. I didn't accidentally sell them to a man in a ninja suit, did I? If I did, I certainly wouldn't have accepted the steal price of £33 for the lot!

The last item is not Sega-branded, but still good. It's a Pac-Man belt bought for £1, originally £15 from GameStation. Lovely.

It's car boot sale season in the UK now, so hopefully I'll get some good bargains this summer. Sega 32X mint in box with games? £1 you say? Deal!

Sonic 1 remade in 3D by fans

Yes, you read the headline correctly, but unfortunately it is not what it seems. Someone on YouTube has uploaded a video that appears to be a preview for a fanmade 3D remake of Sonic 1, but it is in fact just a CG movie.

The video is entitled "Sonic HD", and looks as though it was based on that "real life" Sonic fanart from last year. Both the video and the picture have the same mistakes, such as enemies from Emerald Hill rather than Green Hill. Exclusive to the video, however, is the "lost rings" noise whenever you collect rings.

"Real life" Green Hill Zone.

The graphics are rather impressive, until Sonic appears on the screen. It is quite possibly the worst Sonic model I have ever seen, and is even uglier than the Sonic Heroes render. He should join that list of "Gormless Sonics" I posted a while back.

ARGH!

Here is a translation of the video's description, courtesy of Sonic Retro:
"Video TEASER of a make-believe HD Sonic game created by fans of the blue hedgehog. What do you think?"
Judging by the comments, people don't think it is very good:
"Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha"

"That Sonic is giving me nightmares."

"You... really need a better model for Sonic."
It looks like the only way you'll ever be able to play Green Hill in 3D is by unlocking it in Sonic Adventure 2. Oh well...

Sonic mobile screensaver now available on more models

Here's some useless information for you if you don't happen to own a Japanese mobile phone, but Sega's Sonic screensaver is now available on many more models.

First announced back in April, the Sonic screensaver is designed to be like a virtual pet, reacting when you get a message or phone call. Sonic does many different things on the screen to keep you entertained.

The screensaver is completely free, and is now available on the following obscure phones:
  • P001
  • T001
  • SH001
  • H001
  • S001
  • W63CA
  • W63H
  • Premier 3
  • CA001
  • W64SH
  • W65T
The screensaver is probably in Java or Flash format, so it may be compatible on Western phones. I have no idea how or where you would download it, however!

New screenshots were also released, viewable above.

Fantasy Zone II released on European Virtual Console

Fantasy Zone II for the Master System has been released on the European Virtual Console today. The game costs 500 Wii Points, and has been available in Japan since January. It has yet to be released in North America.

The game was first rated back in March by the Australian Classification Board, which is extremely reliable when it comes to imminent releases. Secret Command was also rated and released in April; however Shinobi, which was also rated, has yet to make its way onto the Virtual Console.

Fantasy Zone II is generally regarded as better than the original, albeit with worse music. The vivid graphics are some of the best on the Master System, with rainbows and clouds aplenty. It retains the Defender-style gameplay of the original, as well as all the cutesy designs.

Interestingly, the game was "ported" to Sega's legendary System-16 arcade board in 2008 as part of the Sega Ages series of remakes. It was designed to be as authentic as possible, using real System-16 hardware to stay true to the technical limitations of the time.

The original Fantasy Zone is also available on the Virtual Console, and as an unlockable game in Mega Drive Ultimate Collection.

Sonic cameos in Jazz Jackrabbit

This is probably ancient news in the Sonic community, dating back to 1994, but I'll post it to inform those who did not know about this. I discovered it for myself today when I bought the game!

Back in the days when furry platformers were the number one genre, it was hard to escape comparisons with Sonic the Hedgehog. Jazz Jackrabbit for the PC was one of these games, despite managing to set itself apart from the rest and amass a cult following.

It seems Epic, the developers of the game, were fully aware of this - the hedgehog himself makes a cameo in the game's instruction book! Referring to the fact that he carries a gun, unlike most other furry mascots, Jazz complains that in video games enemies only need to be jumped on to be disposed of.

As you can see, a disgruntled Sonic is standing behind him requesting his lawyers. On the back of the box, PC Format says "on a console a game like this would undoubtedly have a name like Sonic the Hedgehog". Call Sonic's lawyers indeed!

I doubt anyone could get away with this now, which is a shame. It's also a shame that furry platformers, one of my favourite genres, seemed to die with the 1990s. They certainly deserve a revival in my opinion.

Sega acknowledges existence of Sega Vision!

Sega's obscure media device, the Sega Vision, has had little or no official confirmation since it was first discovered back in October. Even its appearance at this year's ATEI left us with few answers.

This was enough to arouse speculation that the portable media player would never be released, or that some parts of Sega were unaware that the thing even existed.

But now, thanks to the wonders of Twitter, we know that Sega is aware of its own hardware's existence. Here is what they said, in response to a user question about the Sega Vision:
"The SEGA Vision? Sega Nerds can tell you all about that - they had a hands on a while back..."
Perhaps the Sega Vision is so neglected because it was only ever meant to be low-key? People in the Sega community have reported seeing them in various UFO Catchers around the UK, but they are still unavailable to buy directly.

The Sega Vision is supposed to be released this year, with a price tag of £70-£90. This seems expensive based on the system's poor game-playing capabilities, when fully-fledged handheld games consoles only cost slightly more. New, cheaper and more powerful PMPs have since come on the market, such as the Dingoo A320.

It now seems likely that the Sega Vision will remain in obscurity, only available through Sega Amusements arcade machines. It really wasn't the Game Gear 2 we were hoping for...

Sega at E3 2009, no Dreamcast 2!

Sega have recently revealed their E3 2009 line-up, firmly assuring us that there will be no hardware announcements whatsoever. This comes after recent speculation of a Dreamcast revival, sparked by ThinkGeek's Dreamcast sell-out and Sega's major company restructuring.

Here is Sega's (rather boring) confirmed software:
  • Alpha Protocol
  • Bayonetta
  • Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
  • Planet 51
  • The Conduit
  • Vancouver 2010
These details were confirmed on Sega's Twitter page, as was the statement outlining no future hardware plans. Here is what they said:
"We're a 3rd Party publisher now; as much as people would like a Dreamcast 2 we won't be returning to the hardware market."
There are more rumours about Sega's hardware future, stemming from their latest arcade hardware being applicable to home consoles according to the trademark application.

A return to the hardware market is what most Sega fans, including me, desperately want. If there is an announcement, expect it on 09/09/09!

UK Charts: Week Ending 02/05/09

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games is falling further away from its usual Top Ten home, down one place at #12. Sonic Unleashed, much like Football Manager did last week, has made a massive leap up the charts. It is now at #21, up nineteen places from last week's perilous #40.

Mega Drive Ultimate Collection has dropped eight places to #23, despite its apparent rise up the charts last week. Football Manager 2009 has stayed put at #26, ending this week's charts.

Just a note on other regular features - MTV's monthly Wii usage stats may come later than normal, if at all this month. This is due to their blog's recent hiatus, which has opened again today and will see further announcements this week.

More charts next week. See last week's here.

Famitsu's Phantasy Star comics

Looking on Famitsu's website today, I noticed that they have been publishing a regular Phantasy Star comic as part of their "Bros. Comics EX" series.

Both Phantasy Star Portable and Phantasy Star Zero have received manga adaptations, as have Shining Wind and Shining Force. Valkyria Chronicles was also turned into a manga comic and anime cartoon series, unrelated to Bros. Comics EX.

The comics are printed in every issue of Famitsu, with many other RPGs being given the manga treatment. Kingdom Hearts has been one of the most popular so far, even being translated into English and released in the West.

The comics are later available to buy in anthologies from Enterbrain, usually for around ¥1000 (£6.75) each.

What in the name of Sega is going on here?

As you would expect, the comics are completely insane. At least they are nice to look at, despite being unreadable to most of us! The comics also read from back to front - at least the online version does.

Unfortunately, we will probably never see English translations of these. The only Sega game ever to see a major Western comic adaptation is Sonic, which occasionally had one-off specials for games such as Streets of Rage. Looks like I'll have to dig out my old Sonic the Comics!

Sonic papercraft?

If you have nothing to do this Bank Holiday weekend, why not try your hand at some Sonic-themed papercraft?

Found on the official Japanese Sonic page, you have a choice of creating paper versions of Green Hill Zone and Tails' Tornado. They have an estimated assembly time of 5-6 hours, so they're sure to keep you busy!

Here are the poorly translated descriptions of them:
Green Hill Zone
This memorable zone was first seen on the original Mega Drive version of Sonic the Hedgehog, and was the very first stage.

Palm trees, jumps, monitors and rings make up this familiar Sonic world.

Some of the images are examples only. Put in any monitor or item to create your own world!

Tornado
Debuting in Sonic Adventure, Tails pilots the Tornado which you can recreate in paper.

It can decorate the table, or you can try hanging it from the ceiling!

There is much attention to detail, so the difficulty level is high.

Paper is prone to kinking, so we recommend you use card.
These interesting kits were originally made for Sonic's 15th Anniversary in 2006. I wonder what we can expect for his 20th Anniversary in 2011?

Hint for Sega: 16-bit Sonic 4. You know everyone wants it...

Galaxy Force II released on Virtual Console

The Mega Drive version of Sega's 1988 superscaler classic Galaxy Force II has been released on the European Virtual Console. The game is available now and costs 800 Wii Points.

Released in Japan back in February, there has been no confirmed date for a North American release.

Galaxy Force II is one of Sega's most advanced superscaler games, surpassing the likes of After Burner and Out Run in graphics and technology. The game is not a sequel, despite the "II" in its title. The name was originally used to differentiate the sizes of cabinet the game was available in.

Although enjoyable, the Mega Drive version of Galaxy Force does not accurately represent its arcade counterpart. The floors and tunnels have been replaced with coloured bars, and lack of true sprite-scaling means the gameplay is somewhat jerky. Reviews for this game are generally around the 5-6/10 mark.

Why Sega have not released the arcade version of this game is a mystery. The arcade version of Space Harrier was released back in March, so surely Galaxy Force and other superscalers were up for release eventually?

Personally, I would wait for the arcade version to be released, if ever.
