Sega re-trademarking more than just games!
It seems that Sega have been re-trademarking more than just old Mega Drive and Dreamcast games recently. A trademark was issued for Sega's 3D NiGHTS controller on February 10th, 2009, being filed on June 14th, 2005.
The application lists a source as "References Patent Abstracts of Japan, Kkai No. 7-204345*, Aug. 8, 1995", the date being almost a year before NiGHTS' release in Japan. This confirms that Sega are just re-trademarking an old patent, rather than new technology.
Interestingly, the patent shows ideas that were never implemented into the controller, such as infra-red, an arcade stick, and motion sensing. If the Saturn was more of a success, these features may have eventually come to fruition.
What ever will Sega re-trademark next?
