MTV's Wii Usage Stats: April 2009

Today MTV posted their monthly update on how often certain Wii games are played. A large percentage of those games are from Sega, so let's see just how popular they are!

Here are the Sega games in order of total play in one month:
  1. Sonic Unleashed - 13 hours, 15 minutes
  2. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games - 11 hours, 3 minutes
  3. Sonic and the Secret Rings - 10 hours, 11 minutes
  4. NEW ENTRY Sonic and the Black Knight - 10 hours, 6 minutes
  5. Ghost Squad - 6 hours, 37 minutes
  6. House of the Dead 2 and 3 - 5 hours, 37 minutes
Sonic Unleashed remains the most played Sega game, with the total play time increasing by almost 50 minutes. Last month the game's total play time increased by over an hour! Sonic and the Black Knight is a new entry, and sits just underneath its fellow Storybook title The Secret Rings.

Next are the games in order of total play sessions:
  1. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games - 8.35 sessions
  2. Sonic and the Secret Rings - 6.97 sessions
  3. Sonic Unleashed - 6.7 sessions
  4. Ghost Squad - 5.28 sessions
  5. House of the Dead 2 and 3 - 4.65 sessions
  6. NEW ENTRY Sonic and the Black Knight - 4.41 sessions
As you can see, the total play sessions produce an entirely different chart. Despite Sonic Unleashed being played most, it has fewer but longer play sessions. The more arcadey the title, the more frequently it is played; albeit for shorter periods of time.

Next month will probably see the entries of MadWorld and House of the Dead: Overkill. Or not, due their dire market performance...

More figures next month. See last month's here.

Here are this month's Wii usage stats from MTV's Multiplayer blog, outlining how long Americans have been playing particular Wii games.

  2. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games - 10 hours, 53 minutes
  3. Sonic and the Secret Rings - 10 hours, 6 minutes

Expect more figures next month. See last month's here.

MTV's Wii Usage Stats: February 2009

You may remember last month I posted MTV's Wii usage stats - an analysis of the games people had been playing on their Wii. This included many Sega games, such as Sonic Unleashed and House of the Dead.

This month there are a few new entries joining the list, including our old friends Mario and Sonic. How unfortunate.

Anyway, to the stats! People played Sonic Unleashed for an average time of 11 hours and 24 minutes all together, which is twenty minutes more than last month. New entry Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games was played for an average of 10 hours and 46 minutes, although for around three sessions more than Sonic Unleashed. It seems people play minigame collections more times in short bursts.

Another new entry, Sonic and the Secret Rings, was played for an average of 10 hours and 5 minutes. Despite this game being better received than Sonic Unleashed, people play it less all together albeit more times.

House of the Dead, which featured on last month's list, has raised its total play time by five whole minutes bringing it to 5 hours and 23 minutes. The number of sessions is still low, remaining at around four or five.

Check back next month for March's usage stats. Here are this month's usage charts for now:
  1. Sonic Unleashed - 11 hours, 24 minutes
  2. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games - 10 hours, 46 minutes
  3. Sonic and the Secret Rings - 10 hours, 5 minutes
  4. House of the Dead - 5 hours, 23 minutes

MTV publish Wii usage stats

Every month MTV post statistics on the games people play on the Wii. They use data from the "Nintendo Channel", which allows users to share what games they have played, and for how long.

This month they have tracked the gameplay of 41 titles by 1.6 million Americans. Included in the list of games was Sonic Unleashed and House of the Dead 2 and 3 Return.

The average play time in December of Sonic Unleashed was 11 hours and 4 minutes, with the average number of sessions at 4.61. That means most users played the game for 2 hours and 24 minutes at a time.

People played House of the Dead for an average of 5 hours and 18 minutes, with 4.38 sessions. People played the game for 1 hour and 13 minutes at a time.

These gaming sessions sound like a long time, but it isn't really that much when you consider that they only turned the game on about five times in one month. I hope they took a fifteen minute break every hour!

The top played game was Super Smash Brothers Brawl, clocking up 64 hours play time on average with 30 sessions. Some people must still use their Wii.

This may become a monthly feature here, so check back in February!
