Mr. Nutz 2 cannot be compiled

Since the Mr. Nutz 2 source code was released last week, there have been several attempts by the Sega community to compile it into a playable rom image. Unfortunately, this has proved to be impossible.

It was first discovered that the source must be compiled on an Amiga. Then, when the game was compiled, some files turned out to be missing. One missing file, "Levels_all", could be created with data all ready present, but "Mickey.library" was entirely missing. This would have made up the core of the game's engine.

Many other files and folders were missing, further cementing the impossibility of the game's assembly. Some people believe that the source code was leaked by a former member of Neon - the game's developer and original poster of emulator screenshots. Therefore these files may have deliberately been left out.

Some members of the community have been urging the creator to release the full game. It would be unlikely that he would be sued, as Ocean were bought out in 1998 and the name "Mr. Nutz" has not been used by Infogrames since 2002.

Perhaps in the future a working rom image or the complete source code will be found. We'll just have to wait and see.

Interesting Mr. Nutz 2 graphics uncovered

You don't wanna mess with Mr. Nutz!

After downloading the recently released source code for Mr. Nutz 2, I opened some of the graphics files to find much interesting stuff!

All of the graphics files are in IFF format, confirming that the game was developed on an Amiga. Browsing through them I found the full title screen, including the squirrel's signature quiff; a giant fist, and some fonts.

Of course, all of the graphics were included, so looking through each individual parallax layer and sprite was weird. I can't wait until this is finally compiled, which will have to be done on an Amiga.

Here is the original post from last April about the discovery of Mr. Nutz 2, which is where the screenshots originated. It seems one of the developers of the game has an actual working rom image, not the poster of the source code as assumed by the screenshots that accompanied it.

In other news, someone has ported Wolfenstein over to the 32X. Annoyingly, many major blogs have reported on this before me even though I knew about it a while ago. I was waiting until it was out of alpha stages before I posted, so I've missed out! Anyway, the game is progressing quickly and music is expected soon. I'll post more when the game is further down the line!

Mr. Nutz 2 source code released

Someone over on the ASSEMblergames forums has apparently released the source code for the unreleased Mega Drive game Mr. Nutz 2. The game is actually a port of the original Amiga game, developed in 1995 by German team Neon Studios.

The downloads do not work, however, as the bandwidth has been exceeded. There are currently no working mirrors, so we don't know if the code is genuine as of yet.

A few years ago some screenshots of the game were released by someone who worked on the game. They did not release any source code due to legal reasons. It is only now that the code has been released, ready to be turned into a working emulator image.

The game was actually reviewed at the time, but never released due to the waning Mega Drive market. Ocean subsequently stopped producing Mega Drive and other 16-bit games as a whole, moving onto next-generation systems. The Mega Drive would actually continue to be supported in Europe for another three years.

I really hope the source code is genuine as Mr. Nutz is one of my favourite platformers. It was always a shame that only one Mr. Nutz game was released for home consoles, so now we may finally be able to play another game from the series.

I will post more information as soon as I get it, which looks likely to be in the next few days. The Sega scene works fast!
