Sonic is officially the UK's favourite games character!

In a poll for the upcoming London Games Festival, 500 UK gamers voted for their favourite games character of all time. Sonic the Hedgehog came in at #1, with 24% of the vote. Despite his recent run of mediocre games, us here in the UK still like him best. Fond memories of the Mega Drive years and his '90s attitude seem to make Sonic still as popular as ever.

Here is the Top Ten:

1. Sonic the Hedgehog (24 per cent)
2. Super Mario (21 per cent)
3. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) (16 per cent)
4. Donkey Kong (11 per cent)
5. Pac Man (10 per cent)
6. Link (The Legend of Zelda) (5 per cent)
7. Max Payne (4 per cent)
8. Pikachu (Pokemon) (3 per cent)
9. Niko Belic (Grand Theft Auto series) (2 per cent)
10. Blanka (Street Fighter) (1 per cent)
Other (3 per cent)

I'm actually surprised at this, as I expected Mario to be at #1. However, people are voting for the character and not the games, so it seems the UK still sees him as the ugly, fat, geeky plumber that he is. Me included.

However, using my Sociology AS-level, I can determine that the sample of just 500 people is not truly representative of the nation as a whole. Also, only gamers were polled; if a wider cross-section of the British public voted, the results could be different. Although the poll was asking people's favourite game character of all time, Niko Belic of GTA IV still managed to chart. I think if this poll was taken again in a year's time, he would not be on the list. Also, the recent Max Payne movie hype could explain his presence in the top ten. As a result I do not think this poll provides valid or reliable results, however I will not disagree with it as Sonic is number one. Yay!

P.S. I would have voted for Tails. Don't laugh.
