Celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall with your Game Gear

Today marks the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was on this day in 1989 that the border crossings were opened to allow people to freely travel either side of Berlin, previously split in two since 1961.

There have been celebrations worldwide today, so why not have a look at this obscure Game Gear title to mark the occasion?

Not a very historically-accurate portrayal.

The game in question is called The Berlin Wall, released in 1991 in the arcades and on the Game Gear by Kaneko. It plays similarly to Space Panic and Lode Runner, whereby you must navigate various platforms linked by ladders and trap enemies.

The only links to the Wall itself are that you must chip away bits of concrete, and there are poorly digitised photos of the Berlin Wall scattered throughout the game. Nice.

You'll have a hard time finding a copy of the game as it was only released in Japan, but at least Game Gear games are region-free.

Sonic Chaos to get Virtual Console release?

Our ever-reliable friends over on the Australian Classification Board have just rated the game Sonic Chaos, meaning that the game may become available on the Virtual Console. This has been made more likely by the fact that the publisher was listed as "Nintendo".

Given a "General" rating, it is more likely that the Master System version will be used as it has a wider screen. If this is true, then it may be a PAL exclusive as it was originally released in that single territory as Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos, with the Game Gear version being released worldwide. However, the title has been listed as "multi-platform", so there is no definite answer.

No other news has been given, such as a release date, but I will report when there is more information.

SEGAtastic is 3D-compatible!

With the latest 3D technology being used in cinema and 3D games being showcased at CES, I thought it was my turn to follow the recent revival! I have purchased some 3D glasses and made some anaglyph pictures for viewing with them. Can you guess what the main subject of them is?

Why of course, I have taken some 3D Sega-based images! I arranged some of my consoles so that they overlapped to create more depth, and the effect is brilliant. They are black-and-white as they are more effective, and because all Sega consoles are those colours!

If you want to view them you will need some red-cyan 3D glasses, otherwise they will look like modern art. Missing from the pictures are my Mega Drive II and Mega CD II, as they are always set up. Click the images for larger versions.

If only more pictures had 3D versions, then I could make a 3D version of this blog. Maybe one day...
