Sonic 2 deemed more influential than Super Mario Bros.

Guinness World Records have compiled a list of the Top 50 Video Games, based on their "initial impact and lasting legacy". This is for the 2009 Gamer's Edition book, the first of which was launched last year.

As with any "greatest games" list, all the usual suspects are there: Ocarina of Time, GoldenEye, Super Mario 64... enough to make a Sega fan puke. However, the list ranks Sonic the Hedgehog 2 higher than Super Mario Bros., with Super Mario Kart taking the top spot.

The list has, predictably, generated some controversy. One aspect is Sonic being higher than Mario, others being that Final Fantasy XII was placed higher that VII and Super Mario Galaxy was included when it is so recent.

Sega games in the list were:
  • #15: Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • #44: Sega Rally Championship
  • #50: OutRun 2
Games that were prominent on Sega consoles were:
  • #33: Gunstar Heroes
  • #34: Soul Calibur
  • #48: Saturn Bomberman
I disagree with most of the list, and some games seem out of place. OutRun 2 over the 1986 original? Seems weird. Also, being an old-school Sega fan, Nintendo's dominance in the list irritates me greatly. Grr.
